Biome Lifestyle knows that being a conscientious consumer does not necessarily mean you are a hippy! We also know that aspiring to have a comfortable and stylish home does not mean you disregard the consequences of consumerism. So, at Biome Lifestyle we have created a range of products that unites style, design and ethics.

Founded in 2005, Biome Lifestyle is committed to providing contemporary ethical home furnishings and gifts. We believe we can address the environmental concerns of the discerning buyer by offering organic, recycled, sustainable and ethical homewares that do not compromise on style.

Biome Lifestyle prides itself on unique and carefully crafted products, many handmade, which have not been mass-produced. The range of products will continue to expand but our key is to always retain individuality and exclusiveness whilst abiding by our strong regard for ethics.

We respect our world and make every effort to cause minimum environmental impact during production, packing and distribution. To encourage British design and keep transport emissions to a minimum, many of Biome Lifestyles products are UK-sourced.

However, many products can not be made in the UK, so we also work with a number of small and wonderful co-operatives in Nepal, Vietnam and India. When working with these groups we follow many guidelines to ensure all products are made under fair terms; offering fair rates of pay and good working conditions to its employees. What is a biome?

A biome is a natural habitat (pronounced by-ohm). As Biome Lifestyle provides natural products for the home ñ the name Biome Lifestyle was created.

Major biomes include deserts, forests, grasslands, tundra, and several types of aquatic environments. In fact, the world itself is one large biome. Each biome consists of many ecosystems whose communities have adapted to the small difference in climate and the environment inside the biome.

All living things are closely related to their environment. Any change in one part of an environment, like an increase or decrease of a species of animals, plants or changes in the weather and atmosphere causes a ripple effect of change through other parts of the environment.

Biome Lifestyle provides natural home products which aim to be sensitive to the environment - from the environment they were made in to the environment or world as a whole.

About the founder

When Alexandra Bishop (formerly Bramham) launched ethical home wares retailer Biome Lifestyle in December 2005 there were three inspirations driving the company: style, good design and strong ethics. Each inspiration remains, defining everything the company does, from the products it sells to the suppliers it works with.

The inspirations developed when Alexandra and her friends started on the property ladder. As she says, I started to take note of where and how furnishings were made and more importantly by whom. I started to notice that there really are few stylish choices for conscientious consumers. I didn't want to sacrifice my stylish ideals for the more unattractive eco & ethical alternatives.

In early 2005, the hunt for beautiful, yet environmentally and socially sound products began. After searching the web for inspiration, visiting trade shows and talking to designers and suppliers from around the world, Alexandra soon had a range of fantastic products to offer like-minded consumers.

Biome Lifestyle was launched as a desirable compromise for those who want to live in a stylish home whilst minimizing their social and environmental impact.

Building on Biome Lifestyles offering is an ongoing process with each product chosen for its ethical and eco credentials as well as its stylish design. There is a unique and interesting story behind each product, such as where it has come from, how it has been made, or the materials used in making it.
