This week’s eco design!

Friday, September 25th, 2009

I just love this beautiful cabinet…  Each piece is built from sustainably sourced timbers and is carefully made from start to finish by just one craftsmen. The finished product is stamped with the maker’s mark, numbered and signed upon completion. Every piece is built to last and made to be enjoyed for generations. 001

bear-3

I am not sure if it’s due to the arrival of our new puppy, but I am definitely in love with all things cute at the moment!

So thanks to Masahiro Minami, these lovely polar rocking bears really fit the bill!  Masahiro was inspired by the recent creation of Canada’s Pizzly Bear in 2006. The Pizzly (a.k.a. Grolar Bear) are the recent progeny of the Polar Bear (who usually reside in the Arctic) and the Canadian Grizzly Bear. Apparently, the melting snow caps caused these bears’ habitats to coincide, and consequently resulted in their unexpected offspring. Although the Pizzly Bear is an outcome of climate change, Masahiro Minami viewed the union as a beautiful love story and hence he designed the Bears on Melting Ice rocker for his daughter.

I am sure the Bears on Melting Ice rocker will stay in his family for many years to come, and one day their child will understand its poignant significance. But until then, it is likely her only worry will be making sure she has enough time to play with it!

The Maldives new biochar project

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Craig Sams, the former entrepreneur who co-founded Green and Black’s organic chocolate firm has now established an innovative biochar business. The business is about to announce its first deal with the government of the Maldives. The company plans to develop biochar projects on 3 islands in the Maldives, taking waste from agriculture and fishing and turning it into charcoal by roasting it in a low-oxygen atmosphere. The process turns waste into raw carbon which can then be used to fertilise the soil. Sams said: “Biochar can be an important weapon in the battle against climate change and can give mankind much needed time to develop cleaner forms of energy. It cannot be expected to compensate for increasing emission levels so it is vital that everybody plays their part in reducing energy consumption.”maldives

We are delighted to introduce Coco, our new office dog! Well, she doesn’t really live here, she lives at home with me but as she comes to work with me everyday, she is now a bona fide member of the Biome team!

She is only 9 weeks and is adorable. Her favourite pastimes include riffling through the paper recycling bin, chewing on cardboard and sleeping!

She has already entertained us no end so we all look forward to the many months and years of enjoyment ahead. Welcome on board Coco!
