Reclaimed furniture

Friday, March 18th, 2011

I came across a new furniture company the other day and just loved some of their quirky and unique designs. The company is called All About Boats and as you may have guessed, everything is made from boat wood!

Here’s some further details below from their website…

“My name is Achmad Kurt and I’m a German living in Indonesia. I have a passion for the sea, for design, and for doing my part to help our ailing planet. I have been buying fishing boatsshelving, pintus, wine racks, and sofas. Hunting the broken boats was not only a profession – it was a passion. I loved everything about the process; the search, the travel, the villages, and the people, who were often perplexed as to why I wanted to buy their old boats!”

I just love the idea that a piece of furniture can have such an amazing history and story connected to it! Every piece has such character too!

Here are some of my favourite designs below, I hope you like them as much as I do! x

bear-3

I am not sure if it’s due to the arrival of our new puppy, but I am definitely in love with all things cute at the moment!

So thanks to Masahiro Minami, these lovely polar rocking bears really fit the bill!  Masahiro was inspired by the recent creation of Canada’s Pizzly Bear in 2006. The Pizzly (a.k.a. Grolar Bear) are the recent progeny of the Polar Bear (who usually reside in the Arctic) and the Canadian Grizzly Bear. Apparently, the melting snow caps caused these bears’ habitats to coincide, and consequently resulted in their unexpected offspring. Although the Pizzly Bear is an outcome of climate change, Masahiro Minami viewed the union as a beautiful love story and hence he designed the Bears on Melting Ice rocker for his daughter.

I am sure the Bears on Melting Ice rocker will stay in his family for many years to come, and one day their child will understand its poignant significance. But until then, it is likely her only worry will be making sure she has enough time to play with it!

Mr Whippy

Rather than hide energy-saving lightbulbs, the clever designers Nahoko Koyama and Alex Garnett have designed a light which incorporates the bulb within the design. The light fitting mimics an ice-cream and cone; comically called the Whippy light.

Biome Lifestyle always encourages the use of energy-efficient bulbs, although we can’t decide in the office if the light fitting is hot or not…

Re-use art!

I stumbled across this young artist the other day and couldn’t resist buying myself a print! Olivia Jeffries designs are painted on old letters, notebooks or journals. I bought ‘Red’ the other day, but now have my eye on this beautiful picture titled Dancers, drawn on an old envelope. I really love the whole collection – just stunning!
