Wrap up London!

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011
Now here is a very worthwhile cause!  Wrap Up London seeks 10,000 coats to keep London warm during the winter months. The city’s first ever coat donation event, sponsored by Hands On London
Hands on London recently announced Wrap Up London, the first city-wide coat donation campaign in London, which aims to collect over 10,000 coats for vulnerable people, helping keep them warm during the cold winter months.  Hands on London have formed a special relationship with London Underground and the event kicks off with coat donation points at six London Underground mainline interchange stations on Friday 4th November. The stations are King’s Cross, Paddington, Charing Cross, Waterloo, London Bridge and Victoria.
Once collected and organised at Hands on London’s warehouse, the coats will be distributed directly to women and children’s shelters, homeless shelters and elderly centre’s throughout London in an effort to keep the most vulnerable Londoners warm during the winter months.
Elizabeth Grier, Hands on London says: “London’s most vulnerable are  facing an even greater susceptibility during our cold winters. Electricity and gas costs are expected to rise 16% and 18% respectively; resulting in an average annual increase of close to £200. Interestingly, this annual price increase mirrors the average cost to provide a family of 4 with new winter coats. Our goal is to combat the cold and rising energy prices by providing those in need with a little extra warmth via donated winter coats.”
So if you have any old coats you no longer need or use, please head to one of London’s stations listed above tomorrow! xx

Joanna Lumley’s tiger charity work

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

I was delighted to see images earlier this week of the lovely Joanna Lumley posing in an amazing gold & diamond encrusted Shere Khan necklace, with the aim of raising over £300,000 for the fantastic Born Free Foundation.

Designed by award-winning jeweller Catherine Best to depict the tiger in Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Jungle Book’, the jewellery holds 182 precious stones set in nearly a kilo of 18ct gold and has been independently valued at more than £500,000.

The Sher Khan Necklace will be auctioned worldwide from yesterday May 31 until June 17, when a gala evening will be held at the Savoy Hotel in London to mark the 80th birthday of actress Virginia McKenna, who founded the Born Free Foundation.

The Born Free Foundation is an amazing international wildlife charity working throughout the world to stop individual wild animal suffering and protect threatened species in the wild. Some of you may remember the film Born Free, which stared the founder of the charity Virginia McKenna. I watched this film so many times when I was younger and recently bought the DVD so I can watch it again!

Well done Joanna, it’s great to see you are supporting fantastic causes, again!

Join in with Red Nose Day!

Friday, March 6th, 2009

It’s that time of year where the days are getting lighter, the days are slightly brighter and Red Nose Day will be on our TVs once again.

I have watched the Red Nose Day on BBC 1 show since I was very young, so it is something of a tradition to me stay in, watch and donate. Once it’s over, I usually go to bed exhausted (I have to admit, I have never lasted the whole show!), after a night of tears & laughter.

Over the years, Red Nose Day has raised millions of pounds to help disadvantaged children from all over Africa and the UK. It’s a wonderful cause which has done so much to help. Click here to read about the projects all the donation money helps to support.

The site says “we take some fantastic fundraising in schools, offices and homes across the land, mix it with the nation’s favourite celebrities getting up to all kinds of mischief, sprinkle a new Red Nose (or three!) across the entire UK and add a cracking night of comedy on BBC One to make Red Nose Day the phenomenon it is.”

On March 13th, we will be wearing red noses in the office and I will be sure to make a donation both from Biome and personally too. I hope you all at least watch the show for some amazing heartfelt stories & some great comedy moments.

Biome charity baskets!

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Earlier this year, Biome was contacted by The St Vincent de Paul Society to supply some of our lovely handmade baskets. Every Christmas the students of Dominican College, Belfast organise food baskets which are then distributed to underprivileged families within the Belfast area. The college wanted the hampers to not only be fair trade but to be reused by the families for laundry and storage. The SVP is a voluntary organization dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage by providing direct practical assistance to anyone in need. Active in England & Wales since 1844, today it continues to address many people’s needs.

Biome Lifestyle were honoured to be involved with the project and thought we would share some photos of the students with our baskets below. As you can see, the baskets are stuffed full with food and supplies which will hopefully be well received by families. We hope to be involved with the Dominican College project again next year and want to say a big well-done to all the students involved!

I have found an easy and absolutely free way of supporting your favourite charity!

aGoodCause.com collaborates with more than 30 charities and relief organisations and more than 900 e-shops. When I shop with one of these shops via AidMaker, a small piece of software, I automatically donate money to my chosen organisation. Donating money in this way is completely free! The shops then send a fixed amount of the price paid for the goods to the charities or relief organisations. We can all make donations in this way by downloading AidMaker at www.agoodcause.com

Biome Lifestyle plan to join agoodcause.com’s e-shop members so we say download it today and help make a difference!

Celebrities doing their bit…

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

21st Century Leaders is a unique charity artwork project. The charity gather artworks from leaders in all fields; royalty, film, music, Nobel Peace Prize laureates, sports, literature etc. The range of celebrities who have offered artwork range include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Gwen Stefani, Annie Lennox, David Bowie, The Foo Fighters, Christine Slater, Nicole Kidman, Amy Winehouse, Sir Bob Geldof and many many more…

The celebrity artworks are used to create Whatever It Takes products: ‘merchandise with a meaning’. From wristbands to clothing, from tableware to cosmetics and footwear, each product is ethically produced and sold to raise funds for charitable causes chosen by each contributing leader. So far almost £540,000 has been raised, but the aim is to at least triple this figure in the nex couple of years. The money raised will help to fund charitable projects in developing countries, contribute to the protection of the environment and other charitable causes. A few examples of the products available are pictured below

Biome Lifestyle thinks it is a fantastic cause which is cleverly using the ‘power if celebrities’ to raise money and awareness for many fantastic projects. To read more, go to www.whateverittakes.org.
