About the fur
Alpacas are one of Peru’s national and protected animals; therefore it is illegal to kill an alpaca just for their fur. Alpacas are also very valuable for their owners as their wool is very expensive, much more than their skin. As alpacas natural habitat is in the Andean mountains of Peru up to 4,000 to 5,000 meters over the sea level, the temperature in this area can drop to minus 30 degrees at nights. Consequently many infant and elderly alpacas die due to the extreme weather conditions in this Peruvian region. Before, it was a big loss for the farmers in these poor and deprived areas who are in general relying on alpacas for their basic income. As a result, they now sell the fur to further their earnings.
